Your gutters are the most likely place to find hail damage. Hail often dents gutters and downspouts, so check them first. Dents and dings there are a good sign that the roof should be inspected too.

Shingles shed granules when hail hits them, and those granules can clog gutters. Overflowing and clogged gutters can indicate your roof has been damaged by hail.

Your siding is the second place you should look for signs of hail damage. Your deck is also a good indicator of shingle damage after a bad hailstorm. You should get your roof inspected if your siding or deck have hail damage.

Size of hail

Hail about 1 inch across (quarter size) or larger can damage asphalt shingles, but the extent of the damage depends on the roof type, age, and condition.

Signs of damage from the ground

After a hailstorm, a large amount of shingle granules (similar to coarse sand) in your gutters or downspouts is a common sign of hail damage. If you notice dark, round marks on your shingles, schedule a roof inspection right away.

Exposed Fiberglass Mat

Hail can knock off the granules and asphalt and expose the fiberglass mat underneath.

Fractured Fiberglass Mat

A fractured fiberglass mat can cause tears that spread out from the point of impact. Hidden cracks can grow as the shingles age.

Weakened self-seal strip

Damage to the self-seal strip may not be visible right away, but it can weaken the seal and lead to shingles blowing off later.
